Nestled neatly on 2,300 acres west of the famous West Colorado Springs, and Woodland Park, Colorado area is the ranch inside of Colorado’s Game Management Unit (GMU) GMU581. The Wilson Creek Ranch sits at an elevation of 6,800 feet in elevation at the main gate and steadily rises up to $8500 feet in elevation. The Wilson creek ranch is composed of pinion pines sage brush and ponderosa pines. All hunting on this ranch is conducted from a four wheel drive vehicle. Hunts starts at first light by hunting the low lying creek bottoms throughout the ranch as the deer typically come down out of the hills to water. This is then followed up by a drive to a high vantage point to spot the bucks feeding their way back up the hills to their bedding areas. Once a mature buck is found a stalk ensues for the hunter to bag the buck of his choosing. Deer are in the area during the early seasons but by the 3rd season is usually when biggest bucks decide to show themselves more often as the rut is nearing at this point. The deer licenses are a little more difficult to come by without preference points but luckily we carry 3 guaranteed vouchers per year and sometimes a 4th depending on the outcome of the landowner draw. This property is managed for quality with bucks ranging in the 160 class to the 190 class with the occasional buck topping that mark.

Sitting at a breathtaking 9,000+ feet in elevation hunters can expect a very tough and challenging hunt with great rewards to those who dare to take on the challenge. The outfitters family homesteaded on this ground in the 1920’s and has built an astounding quality of Deer and Elk Management. With that being said it should come to no surprise that the outfitter and his guides have a vast understanding of the land and animal habits from season to season. Our Trophy Mule deer run the gauntlet for size since this time of the year the deer are always moving because of the elk hunters in the woods constantly bumping them. We will see bucks that we have never seen before that show up in our private land hunting areas. Weather is an extremely important part of the hunt. As the saying goes, “The worse the weather the better hunting” could never be so true. The trophy hunter as a rule takes bucks between 170” and better depending on when the hunter pulls the trigger. These big bucks are smart and are 3 in 10 on this ranch which is extremely good odds for trophy bucks. If wall hanger 6x6 or better Bull Elk are in your sights running between 320 and 350+ you will be at home here. We have an off balance of bulls with a 5 bulls to 30 cow ratio. This is where quality is even better than quantity. You won’t find this ratio anywhere else that is why we are so confident, and successful.

Double K Ranch

Welcome to the center of the earth, the place where you can get to anywhere and yes you can get anywhere you want to from here. But why should you leave here when there are plenty of Mule Deer and healthy elk populations as well as high quality of bucks and bulls. This is a high density mule deer area and having ranch property and farm property you get the best of both worlds. If you take 10,000 acres and carve out what is the very best area, the place where you always find deer and squish it down to just over 2000 acres you get the Double K Ranch.
We start with the upper portion of the property. The upper part of the ranch is comprised finger ridges with pinyon, cedar, juniper, and pine, that all funnel sown into secluded parks and large meadows. Water is always an issue in the west so a small creek for the year around creates water even in the winter in this semi-arid ground with a low amount of snowfall each winter. As far as elk there are 2 major herds of elk that are on the property and off the property. We have harvested many 5 and 6 point bulls, as well as cow elk. The mountain property has all of the elk hunting a person could ever imagine.
Now we jump to the lower portion of the ranch which is comprised of the Arkansas River bottom with cottonwood trees and great cover for the mule deer to bed in. Large Ag fields comprise the food source for our deer here. We provide archery hunts on this lower portion of the ranch that is conducted from tree stands and ground blinds amongst many travel corridors and food sources. Yes you heard us right a tree stand. Double K creates a unique opportunity we have been very reluctant to find anywhere else. This ranch is surrounded on three sides by alfalfa fields. So what's the catch here? We have the only bedding in a 2 mile radius on the ranch. By having the only bedding we have a phenomenal transition zone for the deer in which we set up tree stands and catch the deer moving to and from their feeding areas. Hunters can expect to see Mule deer groups that vary from 5-20 bucks when they come through. This hunt will start in late August and continue through September while they are still in velvet. Bucks will range from 160-180+ if your patient enough and can stay your itchy trigger finger!
The areas elk and deer are closely managed and the sizes are exceptional. Because of that this is one of the few areas in western Colorado that there are no over the counter or left over licenses even for 2nd and 3rd season over the counter. The leftover are never available because it requires a point to draw. The Hunting unit is GMU 56 for reference. If you draw you are in. If you don’t draw landowner vouchers are provided for deer and elk.
Lodging and meals are the hunter’s responsibility and are available in town about 10 minutes away from the hunting property.
• Double K Rifle/Muzzleloader Elk: $4,500.00
• Double K Archery Deer: $3,750.00

KB Outdoors is now proud to offer exclusive hunting rights on 17,500 acres for Elk, Mule Deer and Whitetail on the famous Cap Rock Canyons Ranch. This property now allows us to offer high quality Elk, Mule Deer and Whitetail hunting that cannot be found anywhere else on the plains of Colorado. The eastern plains are famous for producing high quality mule deer for many years as well as whitetails and the occasional elk if you can find the right area. Due to the high popularity, limited draw, limited hunts offered and superb quality of these hunts, they do book at an extremely fast rate. Therefore if you have preference points we NEED to talk!
Our Cap Rock Canyons Ranch lodging is set in a gorgeous newly remodeled bunk house with plenty of space and beds to make your stay comfortable and inviting with home cooked meals served daily.
We manage these properties very tightly for only the highest quality of animals the area can provide. Not only do we provide high quality animals but also a high quality experience. In the words of the highly respected Donny Vincent “buying an animal is setting yourself up for failure. Buy a hunt however and you create a memory for a lifetime!”
Cap Rock Canyons Ranch is historically famous for producing 180-200+ class mule deer that all boast 30+ inch spreads. IF there is one thing this ranch is known for is the wide racked deer it produces as you will see in the past harvest photos. All deer licenses are obtained through Colorado’s draw process taking 8-12 preference points to secure a tag. We do have the option to procure landowner vouchers if our hunters that are unable to draw at a separate price being as these vouchers take the ranch just as much investment and time to draw just like the general public draw. If you are interested in hunting the ranch and do not have points give us a call to discuss getting a landowner voucher. Once again if you have points we NEED to talk!
Our ranches provide some of the best habitat the eastern plains’ has to offer for growing high quality deer. Our ranch consists of a cottonwood creek bottom, numerous pinion, juniper and cedar canyons with mountain mahogany plants as well as various other highly sought after deer browse. In addition to the exceptional feed and habitat one will notice the age class of deer on the ranch which is directly correlated to the limited hunting options in the units the ranch resides in. ONLY 25 tags are given out for the entire unit for the hunting season, if that doesn’t scream high quality animals I don’t know what does?
Cap Rock Canyons Ranch offers a very unique opportunity that is only observed in the Colorado Ranching for wildlife program. However we are not in the ranching for wildlife program! Instead we are in a special over the counter elk unit that allows our hunters to begin hunting elk in September on an either sex tag…. With a RIFLE! Yes you heard me right a rifle. Elk hunts are conducted in September as the bulls are bugling and rutting. Now don’t think this is going to be a cake walk just because we are hunting at 5000 feet and lower this hunt is no different than any other elk hunt in Colorado its all about timing and being in the right place at the right time. Elk densities are much lower than many other areas in Colorado but beings that we can hunt during the rut with a rifle we have significantly increased our chances. Bulls can be observed in the 300-320 range as an average with a few bulls going well over that mark. That is if you’re in the right spot! This is a very unique hunt that cannot be achieved except for in units with this special season or on Ranching for Wildlife. The catch we have that hooks most hunters we don’t have the price tag most RFW hunts have at $10,000.00 or more. IF eastern plains elk is something that catches your eye give us a call or email today to book this very unique and limited opportunity as we only take 4 bulls per year off this ranch.
Cap Rock Canyons Ranch is also home to whitetails on our 1 mile area of creek bottom located on the western edge of the ranch. Whitetails hunts will be conducted as more of a management hunt in the sense of protecting mule deer populations. Over the last 5 years whitetail populations in the area have exploded and done two things to the Mule deer in the area. One is the aggressive nature of whitetail bucks has completely drove the mule deer that once called this creek bottom home. Two is that the whitetail bucks have started to interbreed with the Mule Deer in the area creating hybrids that are sterile and cannot reproduce. This wraps back around to the first problem of driving the mule deer away. Whitetails in the area have been observed in the 140+ range with a few bucks exceeding that mark.
All hunts are conducted on a spot and stalk basis. We are very methodical in how we conduct these spot and stalks as the main goal is to keep our elk and deer on the property. With that being said patience is the key here it may take a couple days to get the right stalking situation in our favor.
For those of you that are willing to take the challenge and go on the hunt of a lifetime get in touch with us today to take advantage of the great hunting opportunity the Cap Rock Canyons Ranch has to offer!
• Cap Rock Canyons Rifle Elk: $7,000.00
• Cap Rock Canyons Rifle Mule Deer: $8,500.00
• Cap Rock Canyons Rifle Whitetail: $5,000.00
Prices are very fair across the board and instead of the high priced hunting lodge hunt they feel you come to see them for their guiding skills not how well they did in home economics and the crust on the cherry pie. Lodging is available at the Hall ranch it is rustic but comfortable in a heated cabin with 6 beds available in the cabin. Don’t be surprised if when you’re staying in the cabin you get to fall asleep to the sounds of bulls bugling all night long. What better lullaby could a hunter ask for? Home cooked meals served daily.
The Wilson creek ranch does not have lodging but is located within a 20 minute drive of the ranch. Lodging for this hunt is located in the world famous Cripple Creek, Colorado. Cripple Creek is a casino town with a vast amount of casinos and hotels to choose from as well as many quality restaurants that offer a vast array of different food options. In this way you both only have one thing to focus and have your mind on and that is putting meat and horns in the truck.
